In the technological modernization plan of the university hospital complex S.Orsola-Malpighi, situated close to the city center of Bologna, energy efficiency interventions were conducted with the installation of a trigeneration plant with high technological content.
The project consisted in the realization of a new power plant to provide electrical, thermal and refrigerating energy to the internal heating and cooling network that connect more than 30 buildings through technological substations that were also upgraded.
In addition, a new 50 MW thermal plant and a new 12 MW cooling plant were built over the existing unused spaces. In a building adjacent to the cooling plant a new trigeneration plant of 6,6 MW was installed.
After the conversion from superheated water to hot water as primary energy vector to the substations, existing shell and tubes heat exchanger were replaced with new plate heat exchanger to produce hot water for heating and domestic hot water.
